Blowing glass is addiction for me, plain and simple! I was mesmerized by the first time I watched it, and hooked the first time I tried it. I love the way that it starts with a dip of the blowpipe into a tank of hot molten liquid, and begins to take shape with blowing a small bubble.

It is a dance that usually requires a partner or a team, and much practice. Agility, strength, patients, dedication to the art, and the ability to “stand the heat” are all required. “Grace under pressure” comes to mind. It is unusual cast of characters, this community of glassblowers. I’m honored to be part of their rank. I’m grateful to those along the way that have worked with me, allowed me into their studios, and taught me this process.

I have studied glass in several places. I made my first paperweight in an hour session in Spanish Village, in San Diego about nine years ago. While visiting Seattle, the American mecca for the glass artist, I took my first workshop and then continued taking private lessons over several summers. I’ve taken lessons with an Alaskan glassblower in Oregon, and several semesters of private lessons from instructors at UCSD.

I once traveled to Italy to take lessons from a master class sculptor, where I was given an impromptu sculpting lesson by an all-male team. They had never had a woman glassblower at the bench! I spent several summer sessions at Pilchuck school in the mountains outside of Seattle, known as the residential gathering place for glass artist from all over the world.

I currently work with my teacher/partner in Mission Hills. I’m grateful to my husband Ron who is supported me and encouraged me in this journey, and to all of other glass artist who work together to make beautiful art, and share the secrets of this ancient art form.
