Carol Korfin is best known in the art glass community for her animal wildlife glass figures such as the Giraffe. She is the proud owner of over 200 Giraffe pieces of various mediums in her home.
Carol is one of our Glass Fusion artist in our Studio/Gallery 25 which we are located at Spanish Village Art Center in lovely Balboa Park.
How does she created these incredible pieces at her home studio? The first step is to ask what do I want to create today?
The artist will decide on the color, size and design of the piece. Once the cold glass pieces are cut to size and the design is created, the artist will then place on a kiln shelf for firing.
The warm glass process is commonly called glass fusing, the technique used to join glass pieces together by partly melting the glass at high temperature. The fusion process requires multiple pieces of glass, with a minimum of two.
The heating is commonly undertaken in an electric kiln with temperatures reaching up to 1650 degrees Fahrenheit. Once the glass is melted (fused) together the annealing process begins which is the cool down of the glass which can take up to 5 to 8 hours.
The glass is then removed from the kiln and you have a one-of-a- kind masterpiece……
